Two Dollars – #Blaugust Day 23
I finally decided to get on the Project Gorgon bandwagon and give the game a try. I’ve been wanting to download the game for a few months now but really haven’t had the time, or more importantly, the desire to do so. Thanks to a few bloggers i happen to follow, i convinced myself to take the plunge and give the game a whirl. There is no financial obligation to get started, since the client is free for anyone that wants it, so i had nothing to lose. Well except my lives over and over.
Oh boy did i lose, and quite frequently for that matter. This is an old school grouping MMO from the ground up. It reminded me of my few levels in FFXI back from 2004, although not as unforgiving. I could actually solo the random mobs around the starter area and around the first town just fine. Once i started exploring and running off the path, which i absolutely love to do, i got my ass kicked in glorious fashion. I loved every second of it though. My stubbornness in thinking i’d have a better chance the second time around ended with the same outcome. I quickly learned though. That right there is something completely missing from MMO’s today.
Lets get the obvious negatives out of the way shall we? The character models, animations, and combat mechanics not only look terrible but feel terrible. It’s what i expected going in though since this is an independent developer with only a handful of people working on it. Hell i’ve heard rumors of only two or three, which if true, is actually really amazing. Don’t quote me on that but either way, it’s a tiny team trying to build something special. I’m all for that. Eliminate the suits and build the game you want.
Now the landscapes and terrain i actually really enjoyed. I spent the majority of my first night just wandering around and trying to get lost. For anyone that knows me, that is something i rather excel at. I only managed to run around the general vicinity of the first town area so i’m not sure how large the world is, or if the rest is even accessible yet, but i saw a lot and i died a lot. I managed to enter two dungeons where i proceeded to get mauled as soon as i entered as well. It was glorious.
I’m hoping to put a lot more time into the game moving forward. I haven’t quite figured out the intricacies of combat and i haven’t joined any groups yet. To me group play is the most important factor in any MMO i play. I’m so tired of nothing but solo play. Having the option to group is not the same as requiring a group so i hope to get some of that done soon. So far, in the limited time i’ve had to play, i see the foundation of what could be something special. Lane Myer’s imagination not required.
Lane Myer: Johnny…Johnny: Four weeks, twenty papers, that’s two dollars. Plus tip.Lane Myer: Gee Johnny, I don’t have a dime.Johnny: Didn’t ask for a dime. Two dollars.Lane Myer: Well… it’s funny see… my mom, had to leave early to take my brother to school and my dad to work cuz…Johnny: …two dollars… cash.Lane Myer: See… the problem here is that… my little brother, this morning, got his arm caught in the microwave, and uh… my grandmother dropped acid and she freaked out, and hijacked a school bus full of… penguins, so it’s kind of a family crisis… so come back later?
